How to choose a helmet and riding gear

A motorcycle doesn't protect you with a body shell. Your only protection is what you wear. Good gear doesn't just mean safety in a fall – it also protects against wind, cold, rain and fatigue, so you ride with more focus.

How to choose a helmet and riding gear

Helmet

The helmet is the most important piece of gear. When choosing, look for:

  • Approval: look for the ECE 22.06 mark on the label, or the older 22.05.
  • Size: the helmet should fit snugly on your head, not press on a single point, and must not shift when you shake your head.
  • Type: a full-face helmet protects the most; a flip-up is practical for touring; an open-face helmet suits the Classic and Bullet style, but does not protect the chin.
  • Age: replace a helmet after a fall or a hard impact, even if no damage is visible.

Try the helmet on in the shop for at least ten minutes. What presses in the shop will hurt after an hour of riding.

Jacket and trousers

Motorcycle clothing has protectors at the shoulders, elbows, knees, ideally also on the back and hips. The material must withstand abrasion when sliding on tarmac.

  • Leather: the highest abrasion resistance, classic look, worse in the rain.
  • Textile: versatile, often with a membrane and a removable thermal liner.
  • Motorcycle jeans: with aramid fibres and protectors, for the café racer style and city riding.

Look for clothing certified to the EN 17092 standard and protectors to EN 1621.

Gloves

In a fall everyone instinctively puts out their hands. Gloves should have a reinforced palm and knuckle protectors. Wear gloves even in summer; lightweight summer models exist.

Boots

Sturdy boots that cover the ankle and have a firm sole. Trainers easily come off in a fall and do not protect the ankle. For touring, comfortable motorcycle ankle boots are good; for off-road, taller boots with reinforcements.

Be visible

Black is stylish, but on the road it makes you the hardest to spot. Reflective elements on the jacket or a reflective vest greatly increase the chance that drivers will see you in time, especially at dusk and in the rain.

Royal Enfield style

Safe gear does not have to look like a racing suit. The Royal Enfield clothing collection combines protection with a classic style that suits the motorcycles. We will gladly help you choose at Royal Enfield GARAGE.
