Battery and electrics
Check that the battery holds its voltage and that the engine starts willingly. Then go through all the lights: low and high beam, the brake light both when pressing the pedal and when squeezing the lever, indicators and horn. A burnt-out bulb or a faulty brake light turns up in spring more often than you would expect.
Tyres
Over winter, tyres lose pressure. Inflate them to the value in the manual or on the label on the motorcycle. Inspect the sidewalls – cracks, bulges or perished rubber are a reason to replace. Check the tread depth as well.
Brakes
After winter the discs may be covered with a thin layer of rust. It usually wears off by itself after a few brake applications, so ride slowly at first and test the brakes. The lever and pedal must not feel soft and must not travel all the way to the handlebars. Also look at the brake fluid level in the reservoir.
Oil and fluids
Check the oil level following the procedure for your model. There should be no stains under the motorcycle. On liquid-cooled models, such as the Himalayan 450 or Guerrilla 450, also look at the coolant in the expansion tank.
Chain
A chain that has sat over winter is often dry or stiff in places. Clean it, lubricate it and check the tension. If some links do not flex freely, it is time for a service.
Controls and bolts
- The throttle must return to its rest position by itself when released.
- The clutch should have a light action and an appropriate amount of free play.
- The steering must turn smoothly to both sides without catching.
- Mirrors, mounts and visible bolts should not be loose.
First ride
In spring the roads are often full of gravel and grit after winter, especially in corners. And you too have several months of break behind you. Ride calmly for the first kilometres, test the brakes and get used to the motorcycle again.
If you find something during the check, or you want to be sure, come for a pre-season inspection at Royal Enfield GARAGE. Appointments are in demand in spring, so it pays to book ahead.
