Why batteries discharge
Even a switched-off motorcycle draws a small current – for example for the clock, the control unit or the alarm. If the motorcycle stands for several weeks, the battery slowly discharges. Deep discharge damages the battery and shortens its life. Short rides of a few kilometres moreover do not give the battery time to recharge.
Symptoms of a weak battery
- the starter turns slowly or only clicks,
- the dashboard warning lights flicker or go out during starting,
- the lights are dimmer at idle,
- after a few days of standing the motorcycle starts worse and worse.
Battery maintainer
The best investment for anyone who doesn't ride daily. An automatic battery maintainer charges the battery and then keeps it in ideal condition without overcharging it. It can stay connected all winter. On many chargers you can leave a connector permanently attached to the battery, so connecting takes only a few seconds.
How to disconnect and connect the battery safely
- Switch off the ignition and remove the key.
- When disconnecting, loosen the negative terminal first (−, black cable).
- Then disconnect the positive terminal (+, red cable).
- When reconnecting, proceed in reverse: + first, then −.
Be careful that the spanner does not touch the positive terminal and the motorcycle frame at the same time. A short circuit can damage the electronics and the battery.
Terminals and contacts
Oxidised or loose terminals cause the same problems as a discharged battery. If you see a white or greenish deposit on the terminals, clean them and tighten the clamps properly.
When to replace the battery
A motorcycle battery usually lasts several years, depending on how you look after it. If it does not hold voltage even after a full charge and the motorcycle fails to start again after a few days, it is time for a new one. At Royal Enfield GARAGE we test the battery, check the charging system and, if needed, replace it with the correct type for your model.
