How to run in a new Royal Enfield motorcycle properly

A new motorcycle is a joy. It smells of newness, everything is solid and clean, and you would love to set off on a long trip right away. Yet the first kilometres are very important for the lifespan of a motorcycle. Running-in is not a relic of the past. It is the period when the engine, gearbox, brakes, tyres and other parts gradually settle in.

How to run in a new Royal Enfield motorcycle properly

With Royal Enfield motorcycles, proper running-in matters a great deal. These machines are built for relaxed riding, character and long-term enjoyment of travel. If you treat your motorcycle well from the start, it will reward you with smoother running, a better gear-change feel and a longer life.

Do not ride flat out for the first few hundred kilometres

The most important rule is simple: do not strain a new motorcycle. Avoid full throttle, sharp revving and long rides at high speed. The engine needs time for all its moving parts to settle properly.

That does not mean you should ride extremely slowly or lug the engine. The ideal is smooth riding, more frequent gear changes and sensible revs. The motorcycle should work lightly, without unnecessary effort.

Do not keep the same speed all the time

During running-in it is not good to ride at the same pace for long. It is better to vary the speed gently. Ride a little slower for a while, then a little brisker, but always in a calm manner. It is precisely the change in load that helps the engine settle in naturally.

That is why the motorway is not ideal for the first kilometres. Country roads, shorter routes and smooth riding without holding one speed for long are much better.

Warm up the engine before you set off

After starting, let the engine run calmly for a moment. You do not need to stand still for long minutes, but do not twist the throttle hard right after starting. The oil has to reach all the important parts of the engine.

Ride gently for the first kilometres after starting. This applies especially when the engine is cold. You will help the motorcycle significantly this way.

Avoid aggressive riding

During running-in it pays to ride cleanly and smoothly. No harsh take-offs, hard braking or aggressive downshifting. This does not concern only the engine. The brakes, tyres, clutch and gearbox are settling in as well.

New tyres also may not have full grip right away. Treat the first kilometres as getting to know the motorcycle. You will learn how it behaves, how it brakes, how it corners and how it responds to the throttle.

Do not turn the first ride into a marathon

It is not ideal to take a new motorcycle straight on a ride lasting several hours without a break. It is better to ride shorter routes and take breaks. The engine and other parts gradually warm up, cool down and settle in naturally.

Royal Enfield invites exactly this kind of pace. A short ride around the area, country roads, a stop for coffee and a calm return home are much better for running-in than a long, fast journey.

Do not underestimate the first service

After the first kilometres comes an important check. The first warranty inspection is not just a formality. It is right after running-in that the condition of the motorcycle, the oil, the filter, the tightness of important joints, the brakes, the chain and other things are checked.

This service is essential for the motorcycle's later life. If you have a new Royal Enfield, follow the service schedule for your particular model. If you are not sure, get in touch with Royal Enfield GARAGE and we will advise you when the right time to come in is.

What to watch during running-in

During the first rides, notice whether the motorcycle starts normally, shifts smoothly, brakes reliably and does not behave unusually. Also keep an eye on the chain, tyres, oil level and any unusual noises.

If something seems off to you, do not wait. With a new motorcycle it is better to come in for a check unnecessarily than to overlook a problem that could get worse later.

Conclusion

Running in a new Royal Enfield motorcycle properly is not complicated. It is enough to ride smoothly, not to thrash the engine, not to hold the same speed for long, to warm up the motorcycle sensibly and to keep to the first service.

The first kilometres are not about power. They are about letting the motorcycle settle in and prepare for a long life. If you give it a good start, it will bring you joy on every journey to come.
