With Royal Enfield motorcycles it is not a complicated task. What matters is doing it correctly. A wrong measurement can show a meaningless value, and needless topping up can harm the engine more than help.
When to check the oil
It is good to check the oil level before a longer journey, after a longer layup, before the season or whenever you are unsure about the condition of the motorcycle. A check also makes sense after buying a used machine, because it is not always clear when and how the oil was last changed.
If the motorcycle often does short trips, stands for a long time over winter or has a bigger trip ahead, an oil check is a simple way to prevent needless problems.
1. Place the motorcycle on level ground
The motorcycle must stand on a firm, level spot. It is ideal to check the oil in an upright position according to the instructions for the specific model. If the motorcycle stands at an angle, the measurement may not match reality.
Do not check the oil in a hurry at the roadside unless it is necessary. The correct position of the motorcycle is the foundation.
2. Let the engine warm up briefly
Oil is not measured completely cold. For some models it is recommended to briefly start the engine, let it run for a while and then switch it off. This circulates the oil, and after a short pause it settles to the correct level.
It is important not to rev a cold engine hard. A calm idle and a few moments of patience are enough.
3. Wait a moment after switching off
After switching off the engine, let the oil drain back and settle briefly. Do not measure the level immediately after the engine stops. Likewise it is not ideal to measure the oil after a long ride without waiting.
If measured too early, the level may look different from what it really is.
4. Check the level by the mark or sight glass
The specific method of checking depends on the model. Some motorcycles have a sight glass, others a dipstick. Always follow the MIN and MAX marks or the procedure given in the manual.
The correct level should be between the minimum and the maximum. If the oil is below the minimum, it needs to be topped up. If it is above the maximum, that is a problem too. An overfilled engine is not in order.
5. Top up slowly and in small amounts
If oil needs to be topped up, do it carefully. Do not pour in a large amount at once. Add a small amount, wait a moment and check the level again.
Use only the oil recommended for the specific Royal Enfield model. The wrong oil specification can affect lubrication, engine running, the clutch and the overall lifespan of the motorcycle.
6. Do not overfill above the maximum
More oil does not mean better protection. Too high a level can cause pressure problems, oil foaming, leaks or poorer engine running.
The goal is not to get the oil “as high as possible”. The goal is the correct level according to the marks and the manufacturer’s recommendation.
7. Also check the condition of the oil
When checking the level, also look at the oil itself. If it is extremely dark, smells burnt, has a metallic shine or you do not know when it was last changed, it is better to have it replaced.
Topping up alone does not fix old or degraded oil. When the oil has passed its best, the right way is a change.
When it is better to come to the workshop
Book a workshop visit if the oil disappears quickly, the level is repeatedly low, drops appear under the motorcycle, the engine sounds different than usual or you are unsure about the correct procedure.
Likewise get in touch if you do not know which oil belongs in your specific model. With engine oil, guessing does not pay.
Check before a trip
Royal Enfield invites you to country roads, weekend trips and relaxed travel. Before a longer ride, an oil check is one of the simplest things you can do.
It takes a few minutes and gives you certainty that the engine has its basic care in order.
Conclusion
Checking and topping up engine oil is not complicated, but it must be done correctly. The motorcycle should stand upright, the oil should be measured according to the procedure for the specific model and topped up carefully.
If you are not sure, stop by Royal Enfield GARAGE. We will check the oil, advise on the correct specification and prepare the motorcycle so it is ready for the next kilometres.
